Kim Dotcom faces extradition to USA
It is no real surprise that Kim Dotcom now faces extradition to the United States. A New Zealand Court has ruled that the megaupload founder should be extradited to the USA to face copyright infringement charges and money laundering. Kim Dotcom had tried to fight the extradition.
This is a victory for the US government and in particular the department of Juctice as this result comes four years after the initial search warrants were carried out at Dotcom’s properties in New Zealand.
Obviously Dotcom like anyone fighting extradition was disappointed by the ruling.
Dotcom and three co-accused Megaupload executives have alleged to have cost film studios and record companies more than US$500 million and generated more than US$175 million in profits by encouraging paying users to store and share copyrighted material, such as movies and TV shows.
I will continue to watch this case as the proceedings now appear to move to a USA court.
