Politicans asked to stop breaching copyright

The USA presidential campaign is truly underway and the republican party have just held their Republican National Convention. Republican nominee Mr Donald Trump has continually used without permission many artists material in promoting his campaign. Of those artists the music group Queen through their publishers Sony/ATV Music Publishing have reported that they have repeatedly asked Mr Trump not to use the song “We Are the Champions“, which was played on day one of the Republican National Convention.

Queen and the Republican election campaign have continually locked horns on the use of Queens material. In June 2016 Queen guitarist Mr Brian May wrote a blog post protesting the use of the song by the Trump campaign. Mr Mays statement read

Sony/ATV Music Publishing has never been asked by Mr Trump, the Trump campaign or the Trump Organization for permission to use ‘We are the Champions’ by Queen. On behalf of the band, we are frustrated by the repeated unauthorised use of the song after a previous request to desist, which has obviously been ignored by Mr Trump and his campaign,

Queen tweeted this week that they were unhappy about Mr Trump’s use of the song on Day 2 of the Convention stating

“An unauthorised use at the Republican Convention against our wishes.”

The music band Queen is not just unhappy about USA election and the use of their material but any election anywhere for political gain and it was reported that Queen have stated

Queen does not want its music associated with any mainstream or political debate in any country. Nor does Queen want ‘We are the Champions” to be used as an endorsement of Mr Trump and the political views of the Republican Party,” the statement continued.

Other musicians including the Rolling Stones, REM, Adele, and Steven Tyler from Aerosmith have also requested that Mr trump cease using their music in his election campaign

Be interesting how this pans out. Will watch this matter with a casting eye.
