World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Back in 2011, the United Nations General Assembly designated the day as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It represents the main day in the year when the world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted on older people.
Elder abuse is any act which causes harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they know and trust such as a family member or friend. The abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect.
Elder abuse is one of the worst manifestations of ageism and inequality in our society, and most commonly occurs within the family. Whilst elder abuse is believed to be greatly under-reported, the World Health Organisation estimates that it affects between 1 to 10% of older people worldwide.
If you know of anyone that has suffered or is suffering this type of abuse please contact Jason at jasonwking & Associates and we can discuss what you can do.
